For years, I visited San Francisco, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and exploring its iconic streets, but I had never truly explored the Presidio. Located just moments from the city, it always felt close yet distant, and I kept putting off a visit. Despite its proximity, I could explore it anytime, but when I finally did, I realized how much I had been missing. The Presidio has become one of my favorite spots in the city, blending history, natural beauty, and peace in a way that’s hard to capture in words.
Spanning 1,500 acres, the Presidio is one of the most unique national parks in the U.S. Located beside the Golden Gate Bridge, it is a calming atmosphere rare in a city as vibrant as San Francisco. The sounds of the waves and rustling trees, coupled with the breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge, transport you away from the urban bustle.
The park offers a mix of ancient forests and military history, creating a diverse landscape that feels like its own world. Even though it’s one of the most visited parks in the country, there’s an intimacy here that sets it apart from the crowds of other tourist spots. It’s a place that invites both exploration and reflection, an escape that feels worlds away, yet is only minutes from the heart of San Francisco.
The History of the Presidio: A Military Legacy
The Presidio’s history is as layered and complex as its terrain. It is the ancestral land of the Ohlone people. The Presidio was established as a military post under Spanish rule in 1776, and it was to protect the area during the colonial era. Over time, the fort changed hands, first to the Mexican government after Mexico’s independence from Spain, and then to the United States following the Mexican-American War. In fact, it was one of the first U.S. military posts on the West Coast, becoming a central hub for military operations in the region. The presence of the U.S. Army shaped the Presidio for more than a century, with a series of five forts: Fort Point, Fort Winfield Scott, Fort Baker, Fort Miley, and Fort Cronkhite, serving as the backbone of its military identity.

During World War II, the Presidio of San Francisco served as the headquarters of the Western Defense Command, where critical decisions were made regarding national security on the West Coast. It was from here that General John L. DeWitt issued the orders that led to the forced removal and incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans under Executive Order 9066. While the Presidio was not an internment camp itself, it was the command center where the military’s racially charged policies were developed and enforced.

Presidio’s Role During Vietnam
The Presidio’s hospital facilities treated wounded soldiers, especially during and after the Vietnam War. The Presidio cared for burned service members, highlighting its support for veterans. The burn victims were flown non-stop from Vietnam and landed on Crissy Airfield. The old Letterman hospital building still exists, but has been converted into office space.
Transformation into a National Park
The U.S. Army closed the base in 1994, ending over two centuries of military presence at the Presidio. The closure allowed the park to become a national park, starting a new chapter in its history.
After its closure, the Presidio transformed into one of the nation’s most remarkable national parks. This change happened due to the vision and efforts of many people and organizations. A key moment was the creation of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972, which incorporated the Presidio into a larger park system. Getting to the Presidio
The Presidio is just a few miles from downtown San Francisco and easily accessible. It’s a 30-minute drive from San Francisco International Airport. Public transportation options also serve the park, making access convenient. Parking is available, though it can get busy during peak seasons.

From there, explore the Parade Grounds, once used for military drills. Now, they’re open public spaces perfect for picnics, outdoor activities, and relaxing.
The Main Post also houses key historic buildings, including the Presidio Officers’ Club, a museum that offers exhibits about the park’s military past. The Presidio Trust headquarters is also located here, and they are working to maintain the park’s sustainability. With restored architecture, green spaces, and easy access to attractions, the Main Post is the perfect place to begin your visit.

What sets Dalida apart is its ability to merge tradition with innovation. Colibrí Mexican Bistro, located at the Main Post, serves delicious Mexican food in a welcoming atmosphere with vibrant flavors. Other food options include a Café RX at the Transit Center, a Starbucks, a restaurant at the golf course, and food trucks at times around the park for easy, on-the-go options. The Walt Disney Family Museum also has a small eatery, offering light snacks and drinks.

The Presidio offers two excellent hotels: the Inn at the Presidio and the Lodge at the Presidio. Both are part of the Historical Hotels of America. Both offer unique experiences, each deeply rooted in the park’s history and natural beauty.

The Lodge feels like a seamless extension of the park itself, with easy access to the best parts of the Presidio and a relaxing, rejuvenating atmosphere. That said, the Inn’s historical charm and the personal touch it offers make it a fantastic choice as well.
Ultimately, whether you choose the rustic charm of the Inn at the Presidio or the modern elegance of the Lodge at the Presidio, both offer a memorable and tranquil stay. Staying within the Presidio allows you to fully immerse yourself in the park’s beauty, whether you’re looking to explore its historic landmarks or enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this iconic national park.
Rob Hill National Park Campground Experience above the Pacific Ocean.
Open for public tent camping from April 1 to October 31, Rob Hill offers four group campsites that can accommodate up to 30 people. Sites must be reserved through Recreation.gov. In addition to providing easy access to Presidio trails and views, each campsite has picnic tables, grills, and indoor restrooms. During the offseason, from November to March, visitors can access the Rob Hill Campground day use area for picnicking.
